Hyde Park Hilton Hotel
Bayswater Road, London W2
This large ornate building on the corner of Queensway was extensively damaged, due to the severe rusting of its steel frame.
Once cleaned, damaged terracotta blocks were removed from the cornice, columns and arch to the main doorway. The steel was thoroughly cleaned down and treated with a rust inhibitor. However, certain sections were beyond repair and were renewed and braced with new steel sections. Due to the unstable condition of the structure, extensive propping and shoring was required prior to the replacement of over 300, largely moulded, terracotta units, some of which weighed over 500 kg.
Whilst the terracotta replacement constituted the bulk of the works, the contract also entailed brick replacement, the renewal of lead gutters and overhaul of rainwater goods, joinery repairs and redecoration.
